A Message From our President & CEO

This month, 25 years ago, the late Carol Thompson’s dream for our community came true. In April 1998, Carol and a group of dedicated Anne Arundel County community members gathered because they wanted to do more for every county resident. Together they worked to formulate a plan on how to make a substantial and long-term difference in our community. As a result, the Community Foundation of the Greater Chesapeake (now Community Foundation of the Anne Arundel County) was established with two volunteers and an initial gift of $600.

We have come a long way in those 25 years. With $26 million in assets intended for grantmaking, the Community Foundation of Anne Arundel County is now a nine-person staff organization that over the last 10 years, has doubled its active funds. During that same period, our community support has grown exponentially from $400,000 to more than $4-$6 million in annual grant making and we are one of the largest institutional funder of nonprofit organizations in Anne Arundel County.

At the heart of observing this 25th anniversary is this community and all who support us. The impact we have made together is a reflection of our donors, our partnerships, and the dedication of the nonprofits we serve. We look forward to celebrating with you throughout this year.

Additionally, our partnership with Anne Arundel Community Development Services (ACDS) in hosting workshops for nonprofits begins this month with our first on Nonprofit Grant Writing and Fundraising Readiness scheduled for April 21 in-person and April 26, virtually. We will be partnering with ACDS to hold a total of 10 workshops designed specifically for nonprofits through September 2023. Read more here and sign up soon, as space is limited.

Congratulations to Mary Spencer

Our very own President & CEO Mary Spencer recently received a 2023 Michelle Obama Award, honoring Women Leaders. Mary received this award for her work in the community, working to increase diversity on CFAAC’s Board, in CFAAC’s programming and grantmaking, and focusing on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion efforts throughout the community. This award was presented during Women's History Month on March 29 at Quiet Waters Park by Anne Arundel County and the Caucus of African American Leaders. 

Executive Alliance’s Honor Roll

CFAAC was recently named to the Executive Alliance’s Honor Roll. This designation recognizes publicly-traded companies headquartered in Maryland and the private companies and nonprofit organizations that employ women in at least 30% of their executive leadership roles and have women in at least 30% of their board of director seats.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Kudos to CFAAC’s John Rodenhausen and Vincent Moulden

CFAAC’s Director of Gift Planning John Rodenhausen and Board member Vincent Moulden will be honored as Leadership Anne Arundel’s (LAA) 2023 New Leaders on April 26, 2023. Honorees were nominated by LAA Alumni and the community at large for commencing an accepted, appointed, or elected leadership role that serves and/or impacts the Anne Arundel County Community since March of 2022. Speakers Series Recap: Virtual Needs Assessment Presentation

CFAAC invited Pamela Brown, Ph.D. to share a virtual presentation of the 2022 Community Needs Assessment Report Poverty Amongst Plenty VII: Moving Forward Together

Dr. Brown helped participants gain an understanding of local challenges that affect our community and discussed the importance of the community's response to these challenges.


STRENGTHENING NONPROFITS

Fund for Anne Arundel Application is Open Through April 28

The application for funding from the Fund for Anne Arundel opened on March 20 and eligible nonprofits are encouraged to apply. The Fund for Anne Arundel will continue its focus on healthy, thriving, successful children, by awarding grants to programs that address the needs of children and families. There are tremendous unmet needs that remain consistent in Anne Arundel County as outlined in the CFAAC’s Poverty Amongst Plenty VII: Moving Forward Together. The Fund for Anne Arundel was established to align with the findings of the needs assessment report, and to offer flexible and dynamic support to nonprofits doing vital work to address the most pressing needs of Anne Arundel County residents.

In 2023, the Fund for Anne Arundel will make grants to programs that prioritize the health of children and families. This includes access to physical, mental, and behavioral health programs. Applications will be accepted through April 28 at 11:59 p.m.

ACDS and CFAAC Nonprofits Workshop Series

Anne Arundel Community Development Services (ACDS) and the Community Foundation of Anne Arundel County invite nonprofit staff, board, and volunteers to attend a series of five nonprofit skills workshops designed to help nonprofits gain the knowledge they need to sustain and grow their organizations. Each workshop is offered twice — once in-person and once virtual. *Scholarships are available for nonprofits who want to attend in person but need financial assistance.

Environmental Justice Workshop

May 22, 2023 at Noon | Via Zoom

Environmental and climate justice means that no group of people, including racial, ethnic or socioeconomic groups should bear a disproportionate share of the negative environmental consequences resulting from industrial, land-use planning and zoning, municipal and commercial operations or the execution of federal, state, local and municipal programs and policies.

Representatives from the Maryland League of Conservation Voters will give some history and context of the current issues that are facing Anne Arundel County, and the goals for rectifying overburdened communities.

CFAAC is presenting this program as a part of our Community Impact Speaker Series, focusing on the issues presented in CFAAC’s data-extensive report: Community Needs Assessment, Poverty Amongst Plenty VII: Moving Forward Together. This event is open to the public and free to registered participants.

AMFM Offers $6,000 in Grants for Summer Youth Programs—Applications Close on April 15 

Annapolis Musicians Fund for Musicians, Inc. (AMFM), is now accepting applications for grants from its David Glaser Education Fund. Awards will go to nonprofit organizations in the greater Annapolis area whose summer programs benefit underserved students. IMPACT100 Announces 2023 Grant Applications and Workshops

IMPACT100 Greater Chesapeake is proud to announce its 2023 Grant Cycle will open May 1, 2023 to fund nonprofit programs that support Anne Arundel County. This transformational grant opportunity will focus on the following areas: Arts & Culture; Education; Environment, Preservation & Recreation; Family; and Health & Wellness. The 2023 grant amount will be announced on May 1, 2023. Please note that attending the Request for Application (RFA) workshop is a mandatory step for submitting an application.

IMPACT100 will hold virtual grant brainstorming workshops for nonprofits to learn and share ideas for writing a compelling grant request on:
- Tuesday, April 4, 2023 at 10:00 a.m.
- Thursday, April 20, 2023 at 1 p.m.

RFA workshops will provide a walk-through of the grant application process on:
- Wednesday, May 3, 2023 at 1 p.m. (VIRTUAL)

CFAAC Professional Advisor Recognition Society 

Focus on: Frank Campbell, Sims & Campbell 

The Community Foundation of Anne Arundel County (CFAAC) launched its Professional Advisors Recognition Society at the 2022 Celebration of Philanthropy, naming six inductees to its inaugural class—Frank Campbell is one of the first members to receive this honor.  

Frank Campbell, J.D., LL.M., is a Managing Attorney with Sims & Campbell. He is well-known for his charitable heart and willingness to help with anything that will advance our county, often bringing his family to help with community volunteer activities. One of Frank’s greatest strengths is ensuring that important connections are made to improve people’s lives. One of those important connections is his relationship with the Community Foundation of Anne Arundel County.

“The Community Foundation is an incredible resource for my clients who are charitably inclined,” said Frank. “I am happy to have a meaningful relationship with CFAAC and grateful to be a part of such a giving community.”

Turmoil in banking and technology: Optimism for charitable giving?

It’s been three years since the Covid-19 pandemic swept the globe and wreaked wide-ranging havoc on so many areas of the economy. Then came inflation, rising interest rates, and a volatile stock market. Now, advisors and clients are also dealing with concerns about the health of the banking system in the wake of Silicon Valley Bank’s collapse.

Your philanthropic clients may seek your advice on how the recent banking world events could impact their approach this year to charitable giving. Here are three factors to keep in mind as you counsel charitable individuals and families.

Proposed Legislation: Is Better Deductibility Back on the Table?

Charitable deduction legislation ebbs and flows and proposed reform efforts come and go, resulting in the occasional change to the provisions of the Internal Revenue Code governing charitable giving. At the same time, popular charitable giving techniques evolve and grow over time, frequently creating new opportunities for your clients to support the causes they love.

For instance, Donor Advised Funds (DAFs) were first deployed as a charitable giving technique in the 1930s—long before their popularity ascended in the 1990s—and recently reached record highs.

Similarly, Qualified Charitable Contributions (QCDs) were codified in 2006 through legislation that initially approved the technique for just about a year, followed by several legislative extensions before QCDs were made permanent by the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2016. And while QCD annual limits ($100,000 per person and $200,000 for couples) have remained constant in the past, those will change when indexed for inflation under the new laws passed at the end of last year.

The legislation pending in Washington—if realized—may influence the techniques your clients deploy to meet their charitable goals.

Tax Tips to Keep You on Your Toes

Tax season is here and charitable deductions and the vehicles that generate them continue to land on the IRS’s radar. For instance:

  • The IRS is stringent about requiring a charitable deduction to be calculatable as a true “sum certain,” as the taxpayer in a recent tax court case found out the hard way.

  • The IRS appears to be doubling down on exempt purpose requirements for 501(c)(3) organizations. Keep these rules in mind, especially as you counsel clients who are involved with starting a new charity.
