Fun Meets Fundraising: Inspiring Generosity Through Creative Events

What do you get when you mix twenty musicians, a great cause, and a night full of local talent? Answer: A Starry, Starry Night, a  fundraiser held at Ramshead On Stage last month. The event brought together Annapolis-based artists to perform original songs by fellow local musicians, all to raise awareness of and funds for the John Starr Memorial Musicians Scholarship Fund, a fund established through CFAAC. The event was more than just a fundraiser, it was a celebration of community and a tribute to John Starr, a well-known local multi-instrumentalist and composer who helped shape the regional music scene.

A Starry, Starry Night is just one example of how nonprofits are getting creative to raise funds and awareness. Traditional galas, silent auctions, and 5ks continue to engage, motivate, and inspire donors, but many groups are thinking outside the box to keep things fun and fresh.

Another example of creative thinking is Danny’s Run — instead of the traditional 5k or 10k, Margie Kosmerl organized a 24-hour Run (Walk) to support Danny’s Fund, a memorial fund at CFAAC. After losing her son Danny, Margie established the fund as a way to honor his life. Through the years, the run has involved hundreds of runners and walkers. To keep pace with a changing community, the event has evolved into a few hours in the morning and evening. The funds raised by the event makes it possible for Danny’s Fund to make grants in support of nonprofits that provide programs and services to individuals affected by addiction.

Last but certainly not least, our very own CEO and President Mary Spencer took the stage for ”Movers and Shakers,” an entertaining, artistic “Dancing with the Stars-”type competition to raise funds for Maryland Hall. Mary was one of the many local stars who stepped out of their comfort zones by joining the Latin dance competition and we all thought she did an amazing job!

So whether you’re planning a fundraiser* or simply showing up to support one, remember, sometimes the most memorable and productive events come from thinking outside of the box.

*CFAAC is not a fiscal agent for fundraising events.
