We are drawing closer to our biggest event of the year – the 2021 Celebration of Philanthropy Awards, and we couldn’t be more thrilled about honoring each of our incredible awardees. After convening with the CFAAC Board of Trustees, we decided once again to livestream the awards and present an all-virtual celebration. Last year’s event and awardee videos garnered 10,000 views combined, allowing CFAAC to highlight philanthropy and showcase our awardees to a wider audience than ever before.

Welcome to CFAAC

The Community Foundation of Anne Arundel County is thrilled to welcome the following to our family of funds:

• Andrew Kiracofe Memorial Fund: A Donor Advised Fund established in Andrew's memory to provide support to organizations and programs that are committed to the health, restoration, and protection of the Chesapeake Bay, as well as programs that provide young people with experiences that encourage interest in Chesapeake Bay Wildlife and exploration of its natural habitats.

Community Leadership Circle Annual Campaign

CFAAC grows stronger every year, reaching and impacting every corner of Anne Arundel County. With your support, we have done amazing things together – including ensuring that families have basic necessities, strengthening nonprofits through grants, and making sure the community is well-informed through CFAAC programs. With your help, we can continue to aid those nonprofits who, in turn, serve our most vulnerable. We can continue to ask questions, seek other perspectives, cultivate relationships, and create opportunities for our donors to help meet the needs of our community. CFAAC Webinar Wrap Up

Last month, CFAAC’s lineup of webinars included two helpful sessions – Estate Tax Planning and Philanthropy webinar and Beyond Words: An Exploration of the Arts in Healing webinar.

On September 21st, attorney Christine Hubbard shared her knowledge of creating a meaningful charitable legacy within an estate plan in a tax-efficient manner. Participants learned everything from basic estate planning strategies to the most tax-efficient ways to leave assets to charities. Christine also shared information about Maryland inheritance estate tax laws and proposed changes to federal estate tax laws, and provided examples.

As part of CFAAC’s yearlong Speaker Series on Becoming a Trauma Informed County, multi-award-winning leader and Standards for Excellence® Licensed Consultant Rob Levit led an interactive, creative, and hopeful exploration of the role of the Arts in healing trauma. The September 23rd webinar demonstrated to participants how the Arts are an exceptionally important and well-documented modality to help individuals, organizations, and communities toward post-traumatic growth because the tactile, kinesthetic, aural, and visual sensations are activated. Rob explained that creativity comes in many forms, including music, movement, drawing, and creative writing.

Holt, Financial Advisor and Managing Partner with Premier Planning Group in Annapolis, discuss how to approach the philanthropic planning conversation with your advisor, and the types of questions to ask to better understand how your advisor can help you get the most out of your philanthropy.

Asking the right questions can help facilitate discussions among family members, develop a plan for giving, and identify partners to help you carry out those plans.

Mental Health First Aid Training Course

Cost | $50 per person

Did you know that nearly one in five U.S. adults live with a mental illness? Mental Health First Aid training will teach you how to identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental illness and substance abuse disorders. This course, led by expert trainers in the mental health field, will give you the skills you need to reach out and provide initial support to someone who may be developing a mental health or substance abuse problem and how to connect them to the appropriate care. You will also learn how to apply the ALGEE action plan: Assess for risk of suicide or harm; Listen nonjudgmentally; Give reassurance and information; Encourage appropriate professional help; and Encourage self-help and other support strategies. 

This is an in-person*, instructor-led course that is limited to 30 participants. Fee: $50 for training and materials. This course is part of our yearlong Speaker Series on Becoming a Trauma Informed County.

Community Events

Who Will Save Our Mothers?
Anne Arundel Women Giving Together (AAWGT) presents Who Will Save Our Mothers? on October 21, 2021 from 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM via Zoom.

The United States has among the worst outcomes for maternal mortality among developed countries.  Dr. Monica Jones, Luminis Health System Chair for Women's and Children's Services, will be the keynote speaker.  Dr. Jones, along with others affected, will describe the shocking state of maternal mortality in the U.S. among African American women, the reasons behind it, and ways in which we can all help improve the situation. This event is free and open to the public, register here.

CFAAC provides grants to local nonprofits that assist individuals and families in need by providing emergency assistance, such as covering immediate living expenses like paying rent to prevent eviction, utilities to prevent shut-off, fees for transportation to work or car repair, or for essential medication and medical care to return to or maintain their health. Award size is a maximum of $2,500. Grant application closes on November 5, 2021 at 11:59 p.m.

Grants 4 Teachers Application Deadline is October 29

CFAAC wants to help fund teachers' creative ideas to stimulate and inspire our students’ learning. 

Grants are awarded from a minimum of $100 to a maximum of $500. A volunteer committee of citizens including retired teachers, business people, and parents review the applications. The application process is easy and the grant is awarded directly to the school on behalf of a teacher.

All teachers working for Anne Arundel County Public Schools may apply, including but not limited to special needs teachers, music, art, etc. Grant application closes on October 29, 2021 at 11:59 p.m.

Annapolis Rotary Announces Global Grant Scholarship Opportunities
The Rotary Club of Annapolis invites students who live, work, or study in the Annapolis area to apply for a Rotary Global Grant Scholarship. Applications are due by October 31, 2021, for the $30,000 grant to support graduate education abroad.

The graduate program selected must relate to at least one of Rotary International’s seven focus areas: peace and conflict prevention/resolution, disease prevention and treatment, water and sanitation, maternal and child health, basic education and literacy, economic and community development, and environment. Interested applicants can learn more about the program at www.rotary7620.org.

Trends That May Influence What Your Clients are Thinking About Charitable Giving
The 2021 Bank of America Study of Philanthropy: Charitable Giving by Affluent Households confirms that wealthy families are as committed as ever to the nonprofit sector and community causes. Of the 1,626 households surveyed with annual income of at least $200,000 or a net worth of at least $1 million (not counting a primary residence), 88% gave to at least one charity in 2020. Between 2017 and 2020, average giving by this demographic grew to $43,195 from $29,269 – a 48% increase. The motivations and preferences behind wealthy donor giving are also changing. Read more.
