A Message From our President & CEO
We wrapped up our 25th anniversary last month and a big part of this celebration was our Special Offer Nonprofit Endowment program, which garnered the interest of more than 70 nonprofits, helping us to open 38 new funds! These funds will ensure that these nonprofits will have a bright future fulfilling the needs in our community. We are immensely proud of helping these organizations work to financially secure their future.
To ensure the future of our community and the nonprofits we support, we need your help. Like all nonprofits, CFAAC depends on annual donations from caring supporters like you. An annual fund gift is the most crucial contribution you can make to support us. As your Community Foundation, we rely on these funds to continue to assess and address immediate needs, grow assets intended for grantmaking, and deliver quality education programs. We are passionate about our work because we believe in our mission of inspiring and encouraging philanthropy in our county by connecting people who care with causes that matter. Giving to CFAAC’s Community Leadership Fund will guarantee we can continue this mission now and in years to come.

For many of us in the community, giving back is part of our DNA. We want to make sure we share our wealth and even establish a family culture of philanthropy. We find many different ways to give back—by volunteering our talent and time or through donations of money or noncash assets.
When it comes to managing our larger financial contributions, there are several options and two of the most common include opening a Donor Advised Fund (DAF) or establishing a private foundation (PF). Many people come to us at the Community Foundation of Anne Arundel County (CFAAC) asking, “which is better for me?” So, let’s take a look at the differences.
Welcome Morehead-Cain Scholars!
The Community Foundation is excited to welcome five Morehead-Cain Scholars from the University of North Carolina (UNC) on May 30. These Scholars will be working with the CFAAC team for eight weeks this summer to create an in-depth report that will inform our grantmaking strategy.
Morehead-Cain Scholars are top students selected from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill who participate in many educational experiences above and beyond their college courses. As part of their experience, they take part in four, fully funded summer enrichment programs. This summer, the Scholars are fulfilling their “Civic Collaboration Summer” in which teams of scholars embed themselves in cities across the U.S., investigate those communities’ challenges and opportunities, and propose real solutions. Annapolis will be part of this program, welcoming five Scholars who will work closely with CFAAC.
The five Scholars will review CFAAC's Community Needs Assessment report, study the data generated by grants made to address community needs, and work with county constituents to recommend solutions. By working in our community and connecting with key stakeholders across the county, they will be asked to share their thoughts on where the greatest impacts were made and where gaps still exist so that CFAAC can evaluate their findings and develop our programs and grant-making to be most strategic.

Brady Andrew, ’27
Brady is a first-year scholar from Pittsboro, North Carolina. He is undecided as to his major and will continue exploring his interests while at UNC. He is a member of the student-run Honor System at UNC and the Men’s Rowing Team during the fall. When not in the classroom, Brady enjoys playing instruments, making crafts, cooking, exercising, and spending time outdoors.
Lillian Brooks, ’27
Lillian is a first-year scholar from Oxford, North Carolina, majoring in Psychology. She is also interested in pursuing the pre-law track. Outside the classroom, Lillian enjoys playing piano and lifting weights. Additionally, she is an active member of the Presbyterian Campus Ministry and Project Literacy, a group that provides resources to support adult literacy programs.
Nandini Kanthi, ’27
Nandini is a first-year scholar from Cary, North Carolina, majoring in Neuroscience and Public Policy on the pre-med track. She serves as CEO and co-founder of Sensible, a biotech tech startup aiming to decrease cervical cancer incidence rates in underserved regions with a patent-pending diagnostic menstrual pad. In her free time, Nandini loves to dance, hike, bike, and watch Brooklyn 99.
Derek Peng, ’26
Derek is a sophomore scholar from Ames, Iowa pursuing a degree in Business Administration and Mathematics with a minor in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics. He is the president and founder of the Photography Club at UNC. Derek likes to join lectures at the Parr Center for Ethics, audit a Shakespeare class, build with Habitat for Humanity, run, golf, and play tennis.
Catherine Scott, ’27
Catherine is a first-year scholar from Nashville, Tennessee majoring in Public Policy and Spanish with a minor in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics. Outside the classroom, she is involved in student organizations around campus focused on social justice including Community Justice, Abolition, and Antiracism (CJAA). In Catherine’s free time, she loves to practice yoga, backpack, rock climb, and try out new recipes.

During our 25th anniversary year, CFAAC enhanced nonprofit endowments by waiving the fees typically associated with setting up Nonprofit Agency Endowment Funds. We welcomed 38 funds during that time period.

Grants 4 Teachers Applications Open May 20
The purpose of the Grants 4 Teachers program is to fund highly creative ideas that would otherwise be impossible due to school system funding constraints. Grants are awarded from a minimum of $100 to a maximum of $500. A volunteer committee of citizens including retired teachers, business people, and parents review the applications. The application process is easy and the grant is awarded directly to the school on behalf of a teacher. Application Open: May 20, 2024 | Deadline: September 27, 2024 | Award Size: Up to $500 | Awards in October 2024
Supporting Communities After Key Bridge Collapse: Maryland Tough Baltimore Strong Fund
Following the Key Bridge collapse, the Community Foundation of Anne Arundel County has remained in close communication with state and local governments, along with nonprofit organizations in Baltimore and Anne Arundel Counties, to assess our residents' urgent needs. Together, we're committed to effectively directing resources to aid our community during this difficult period. To contribute, please consider supporting the Maryland Tough Baltimore Strong Key Bridge Fund. Residents affected by this tragedy are encouraged to apply for a Key Bridge Grant administered by the Baltimore Community Foundation. Other relief and recovery information can also be found through the Maryland Philanthropy Network.

Anna E. Greenberg Board Leadership Symposium: Board and Staff Relations in an Evolving Sector: the good, the bad, the insightful
The annual Anna E. Greenberg Leadership Symposium will delve into the relationship between nonprofit organization boards and staff within an ever-evolving sector. Youth Mental Health First Aid Training Course (In-Person)
Designed for adults who regularly interact with adolescents aged 12-18, this course teaches a 5-step action plan to assist young people facing mental health challenges or crises. Led by expert trainers certified by the National Council for Mental Well Being, topics include anxiety, depression, substance use, and more. The course costs $25/person, includes materials and refreshments, and is limited to 30 participants. Register by May 24th for a certificate of completion.
