Winds of Change and Headwinds: Legislation and Inflation
Closely-Held Business Interests: Adventuresome Giving
It’s almost spring and things are beginning to bloom – both literally and metaphorically. We are seeing buds on trees as well as buds of change in our community in terms of more outdoor activities and in-person events. In all of this, there is hope.
CFAAC currently has two grants open that offer hope to nonprofits. Both the Fund for Anne Arundel (FFAA) and the Community Crisis Response Fund (CCRF) grant applications opened in February. The CCRF closes tomorrow at 11:45 pm and the FFAA will close on March 31, 2022. Then on April 4, applications will open for Help Our Neighbors grants. Help Our Neighbors provides grants to local nonprofits that assist individuals and families in need by providing emergency assistance, such as covering immediate living expenses— paying rent to prevent eviction, utilities to prevent shut-off, fees for transportation to work or car repair, or for essential medication and medical care to return to or maintain their health.
These funds not only help strengthen our nonprofits and community, but also provide you the opportunity to target your contributions to one or more funds that you care about – whether that be education, youth, health, or providing basic necessities to those who need it most.
As the new season approaches, we encourage you to support local nonprofits through Field of Interest Fund contributions or by opening a Donor Advised Fund and designating grants to causes you are passionate about. Most importantly, grants from CFAAC ensure the community will bloom and flourish, and we can’t think of a better way to celebrate spring.
Warmly,
Mary Spencer
President & CEO
Damika Baker-Wilson Joins CFAAC
Damika Baker-Wilson joined the Community Foundation in mid-February as Director of Development, becoming acclimated quickly as she studied our policies, attended webinars, and met with the CFAAC Board this week. In her new role, Damika will be responsible for the planning, implementation, and execution of a development strategy to attract individual gifts, private foundation gifts, and deferred gifts for CFAAC and will be primarily responsible for developing and sustaining relationships with donors, fund holders, and community partners.
“The team here at CFAAC has been extremely welcoming, making it very easy for me to feel at home after only two weeks,” said Damika. “I'm really looking forward to getting to know the organization better. The many ways that CFAAC shows up in the community is one of the things that I found most appealing.”
Please join us in welcoming Damika and if you have any questions, feel free to contact her at Damika@cfaac.org or 410.280.1102, ext.102.
Meet our County’s EDI Team and Learn How to Apply the Equity Lens at Your Workplace
Wednesday, March 16, 2022
12 noon via Zoom
In this webinar, Pete Hill, Anne Arundel County’s Director of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI), leads an interactive discussion on why the County Executive found the need to create an EDI Office, the work that has been done so far, and what it hopes to accomplish in the future.
During this presentation, you will be introduced to the EDI staff, the goals and objectives identified by the County Executive, and the equity lens, a tool the EDI team uses to ensure all county departments apply critical thinking skills when introducing and implementing new policies. At the end of this session, you'll also learn how to apply the equity lens to your workplace. This webinar is free to the community.
Herzberg-Wild Memorial Scholarship Opens February 15
The Lance Corporal Eric William Herzberg and Lance Corporal William Taylor Wild IV Memorial Scholarship (Herzberg-Wild Scholarship) was established at CFAAC by anonymous donors to honor two fallen Marines, Eric W. Herzberg and Taylor Wild IV, who were both Anne Arundel County residents. Both were proud U.S. Marines who dedicated their lives to protecting and defending our country.
Since 2014, scholarships have been awarded annually to graduating Anne Arundel County Public High School students who exhibit the Marine Corps values of Honor, Courage and Commitment; the ability to persist in the face of significant personal obstacles; and the ability to provide quiet leadership in their school and in their community.
Scholarship recipients are eligible for reapplication for one consecutive year pending successful academic progress. Eligible education expenses include tuition, fees, books, equipment and/or tools associated with a specific academic or trades training program.
Two $10,000 Herzberg-Wild Scholarships will be awarded in 2022 to graduating Anne Arundel County Public High School students.
Completed applications must be submitted by April 1, 2022.
The Officer Grant Turner Memorial Scholarship Opens on March 1, 2022
The Officer Grant Turner Memorial Scholarship Fund was established after Officer Grant Turner passed away to honor his love of baseball. The Fund Advisors host one of the largest preseason baseball tournaments in the state. Proceeds from the tournament are used to provide scholarships to students who meet one or more of the following criteria:
Graduating student-athlete from South River High School
Dependent of the Maryland Transportation Authority Police Department
Dependent of the Maryland Diamond/Anne Arundel County Umpires Association
Completed applications must be submitted by April 15, 2022. Additional criteria may apply.
Community Crisis Response Fund Closes Tomorrow
As nonprofits continue shifting from a mindset of crisis response due to the COVID-19 pandemic to resilience and recovery, there are still great needs. Requests for funding must directly relate to increased needs as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Grants will be awarded to nonprofit organizations that provide services to support clients who have experienced increased needs directly as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. These may include, but are not limited to:
lack of basic human resources (diapers, hygiene products, etc.)
food insecurity
homelessness
domestic violence or child abuse
childcare challenges
limited access to health/mental health or educational resources
transportation challenges (including to/from vaccination and testing sites)
Priority will be given to nonprofits with deep roots in the community, a demonstrated ability to address urgent needs, and who reach historically underserved and vulnerable populations.
CFAAC will award grants up to $5,000. The grant application closes on March 4, 2022 at 11:45 p.m. Note: the application does require a narrative description, and program and operating budgets.
Fund for Anne Arundel Grant Application is Open
The Fund for Anne Arundel (FFAA) will continue its focus on healthy, thriving, successful children, by awarding grants to programs that address the needs of children and families. There are tremendous unmet needs that remain consistent in Anne Arundel County as outlined in the CFAAC Community Needs Assessment, Poverty Amidst Plenty VI: On the Road to Progress for All. The FFAA was established to align with the findings of the needs assessment report, and to offer flexible and dynamic support to nonprofits doing vital work to address the most pressing needs of Anne Arundel County residents.
In 2022, the Fund for Anne Arundel will continue to make grants to programs that prioritize the health of county children and families. This includes access to physical, mental, and behavioral health programs.
The Fund for Anne Arundel will award three to five 12-month grants between $25,000 and $50,000. The grant application closes on March 31, 2022 at 11:45 p.m.

Winds of Change and Headwinds: Legislation and Inflation
You may have noticed that Donor Advised Funds have been featured recently in financial and wealth management publications. That’s in part because the Accelerating Charitable Efforts (ACE) Act was reintroduced in the House of Representatives on February 3, 2022. The legislation contains the same proposed law changes as the bill introduced in the Senate in July 2021, which stalled.
Portions of the bill are designed to address concerns that Donor Advised Funds are not required to make distributions to charities according to any timeframe or monetary level. The ACE Act proposes to create four new categories of Donor Advised Funds, each with different tax consequences to the donor. Read more on our blog for professional advisors.
Closely-Held Business Interests: Adventuresome Giving
The number of U.S. businesses totals more than 27 million, but only a tiny fraction of those are publicly traded. Even so, your clients still have plenty of opportunities to give highly-appreciated marketable securities to fund their charitable endeavors. With the millions of closely-held businesses that aren’t publicly traded, though, many of your clients may have an untapped opportunity to give corporate interests, especially considering that private equity fundraising continues to soar.
