A Message from our President & CEO

Wow, February was a short month but we accomplished quite a bit at the Community Foundation. First, we opened two new cycles for grantmaking – both the Community Crisis Response Fund and the Fund for Anne Arundel. Second, we hosted our first Community Impact Speaker Series on ACES, Trauma, and the Pandemic and discussed becoming a trauma informed county. With over 300 participants registered, we have come to realize that this is a topic of deep interest and concern in our community. We plan to offer additional programs to continue the conversation throughout the year. Finally, we had our first quarterly board meeting of 2021 where we reviewed all that we accomplished in 2020, discussed plans for 2021, and welcomed our three newest board members – Andrea Beegle, Vincent Moulden, and Martha Van Woerkom.

Speaking of accomplishments, Anne Arundel County has just been named a finalist for the Robert Wood Johnson National Culture of Health Prize. This is an extraordinary honor, and the county is one of nine finalist communities from the original 90 applications from across the nation. The Community Foundation of Anne Arundel County is named as the official private partner in the prize because of our collaborative work throughout the county to support the government agencies, nonprofits, and organizations who are all working to improve the health of our community. I look forward to sharing more about this news in the coming months as leaders from the community participate in site visits and interviews conducted by the award review committee. The final award is expected to be announced in the fall.

As always, thank you for your support. With spring right around the corner, all of us at CFAAC look forward to updating you on the many ways our community of donors is growing and continuing to support our treasured nonprofits, bringing sunshine and hope to so many.

The Community Foundation of Anne Arundel County (CFAAC) recognizes the power of philanthropy to transform communities. We are a convener of service providers, a thought partner, an advocate for local nonprofits, and a catalyst for innovative ideas and community problem-solving.

We work closely with members of our board, community leaders, and nonprofit organizations to identify and understand the areas where the people in our community need the most help. Our staff monitors all areas of community need—including human services, education, the environment, healthcare, the arts, and economic development.

Through initiatives like our Community Needs Assessment, Community Impact Speaker Series, and Grantmaking programs such as the Community Crisis Response Fund, Fund for Anne Arundel, Help Our Neighbors, and Grants for Teachers, we are committed to addressing the challenges in our community—today and tomorrow.

The needs of our community are ever-changing and CFAAC has its finger on the pulse of the community’s top priorities and the best way to address them. Find Joy through Philanthropy and Planned Giving

One of the greatest joys is seeing someone else thrive because of your philanthropy. Giving enables us to focus beyond our own material concerns and think about others. It is a tangible way we can show care and concern as well as partner with others to benefit the community. Through a planned gift at the Community Foundation of Anne Arundel County (CFAAC), you have an opportunity to share the joy of philanthropy with your family by involving your children and grandchildren in your philanthropic decisions. CFAAC has many options and types of funds, such as Donor Advised Funds, that allow you to support all your favorite charities and appoint successor advisors, so future generations can carry on the generous work you began. Setting up an estate plan that establishes an endowment through a Legacy Donor Advised Fund will benefit the organizations you support in perpetuity and allow your family’s future generations to continue your philanthropic legacy. COMMUNITY IMPACT

Herzberg-Wild Memorial Scholarship - Accepting Applications 

The Lance Corporal Eric William Herzberg and Lance Corporal William Taylor Wild IV Scholarship (Herzberg-Wild Scholarship) was established at CFAAC by anonymous donors to honor two fallen Marines, Eric W. Herzberg and Taylor Wild IV, who were both Anne Arundel County residents. Both were proud U.S. Marines who dedicated their lives to protecting and defending our country.  

Since 2014, these scholarships have been awarded annually to graduating Anne Arundel County Public High School students who exhibit the Marine Corps values of Honor, Courage, and Commitment; the ability to persist in the face of significant personal obstacles; and the ability to provide quiet leadership in their school and in their community.

Scholarship recipients are eligible for reapplication for one consecutive year pending successful academic progress. Eligible education expenses include tuition, fees, books, equipment and/or tools associated with a specific academic or trades training program.

Two $10,000 Herzberg-Wild Scholarships will be awarded in 2021 to graduating Anne Arundel County Public High School students. Completed applications must be submitted by April 2, 2021.

Officer Grant Turner Memorial Scholarship Fund - Accepting Applications

The Officer Grant Turner Memorial Scholarship Fund was established after Officer Grant Turner passed away to honor his love of baseball. The Fund hosts one of the largest preseason baseball tournaments in the state. Proceeds from the tournament are used to provide seven scholarships to students graduating from Anne Arundel County High Schools: Annapolis High School, Arundel High School, Chesapeake High School, Glen Burnie High School, Old Mill High School, Severna Park High School,  and South River High School. In addition, scholarships are awarded to a dependent of the Maryland Transportation Authority Police Department and the Maryland Diamond/Anne Arundel County Umpires Association. Completed applications must be submitted by April 15, 2021.

STRENGTHENING NONPROFITS

Community Crisis Response Fund Grant Application

As we enter 2021, the COVID-19 pandemic continues. To remain stable and strong, nonprofits are shifting from a mindset of crisis response to resilience and recovery.  While the priority giving areas covered by this grant have been expanded, requests for funding must directly relate to increased needs as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

For this phase of grantmaking, grants will be awarded to nonprofit organizations that provide human services and emergency assistance, as well as health/mental health and educational resources. Examples include (but are not limited to) food, shelter, transportation, living expenses, and rent/utility assistance. Also included will be funding for advocacy and/or community organizing projects focused on improving systems for food security, violence prevention, medical care access (including, but not limited to, transportation to and from vaccination sites), childcare, and education.

CFAAC will award grants between $2,500 and $20,000. Now accepting grant applications through March 12, 2021 at 11:59 p.m. Note: the application does require a narrative description, and program and operating budgets.

Fund for Anne Arundel Grant Application

In 2021, the Fund for Anne Arundel will make grants to programs that prioritize the health of children and families. This includes access to physical, mental, and behavioral health programs.

The Fund for Anne Arundel will award three to five 12-month grants between $25,000 and $50,000. Now accepting grant applications through April 15, 2021 at 11:59 p.m.

Chaney Enterprises Foundation Fund Grant Application 

The 2021 Chaney Enterprises Foundation Fund grant application timeline is as follows:

Cycle 1 – grant applications open from February 1 through March 30; awards made in May. PLEASE NOTE: This cycle is open to nonprofits located and serving populations primarily outside of Anne Arundel County.

Cycle 2 – grant applications open from July 1 through August 30; awards made in October.

COMMUNITY GRANTS

Grants Available from Parole Rotary Club

The Rotary Club of Parole (Annapolis) Foundation is receiving grant applicants from now until March 19, 2021 for nonprofit organizations in Anne Arundel County that serve the needs of children in the areas of education, health, and the arts.

AAWGT: Annual Women & Leadership Event: Women Leaders Fostering Change

Anne Arundel Women Giving Together (AAWGT) invites the community to join them for a stimulating virtual panel discussion with three extraordinary women – Linda Gooden, Rear Admiral (Ret.) Margaret Kibben, and Dr. Monica Brown Jones  –  on March 10th at 6:00 p.m. Bring your thoughts and questions for a lively discussion on making positive change and supporting rising female leaders. AACPL Virtual Funding Information Network Workshops 

Anne Arundel County Public Library (AACPL) has restarted their Funding Information Network workshops as virtual events:

The Foundation Directory Online (FDO) Essential by Candid is also available with remote access through AACPL. FDO is a fundraising database that gives grant seekers access to the largest amount of clean and coded philanthropic data that currently exists.
