FOUNDATION NEWS

Each year throughout the month of January, we reflect on the prior year and take stock in all that we have accomplished. Now, it is time that we look ahead to the year before us, continue our hard work, and feel the excitement of what is to come.

That said, the CFAAC staff and Board of Trustees are moving ahead with full steam, remaining committed to Anne Arundel County and putting the people and plans in place to achieve all we can for our community. I am proud to work alongside such a passionate group of people who prioritize serving their community.

We are thrilled to welcome Damika Baker-Wilson to our Community Foundation family as our new Director of Development! From the moment we met Damika, we knew she was the perfect fit. With her strong, well-rounded development background, commitment to the value of building relationships, and deeply held belief in the power of philanthropy to change lives, we are convinced that she will be an incredible asset to our small, but mighty team. She will start on February 14. You can read more about her in this newsletter.

The Fund for Anne Arundel call for grant applications opens this month. It is our third year of grantmaking for this fund, which remains focused on Anne Arundel County children’s mental, physical, and emotional health. For more information and to support this important fund, click here.

We are also opening the Community Crisis Response Fund call for applications in February. This fund was established to provide flexible financial assistance to nonprofits immediately following a crisis in our community. The need continues to be great as many in the community still struggle to deal with Covid-19. Find more information and donate here.

Lastly, we are busy working on our 2021 annual report that will feature not only our donor listings, but also inspiring stories of fundholders and donors. There is so much for us to be proud of and we can’t wait to share our accomplishments as well as motivating content about those who have contributed to those achievements.

Warmly,

Mary Spencer
President & CEO

Meet our County’s EDI Team and Learn How to Apply the Equity Lens at Your Workplace

Wednesday, March 16, 2022
12 noon via Zoom

In this webinar, Anne Arundel County’s first Director of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI), Pete Hill, leads an interactive discussion on why the County Executive found the need to create an EDI Office, the work that has been done so far, and what it hopes to accomplish in the future.

During this presentation, you will be introduced to the EDI Staff, the goals and objectives identified by the County Executive, and the equity lens, a tool the EDI team uses to ensure all county departments apply critical thinking skills when introducing implementing new policies. At the end of this session, you'll also learn how to apply the equity lens to your workplace. This webinar is free to the community.

Pete Hill, a Glen Burnie resident, serves as Anne Arundel County's first Director of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI). In this role, he is working on a county-wide EDI strategy that will be the roadmap for department and government-wide equity action plan implementation.

STRENGTHENING NONPROFITS

Community Crisis Response Fund Grant Application Opens on February 7

As nonprofits continue shifting from a mindset of crisis response due to the COVID-19 pandemic to resilience and recovery, there are still great needs. Requests for funding must directly relate to increased needs as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Grants will be awarded to nonprofit organizations that provide services to support clients who have experienced increased needs directly as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. These may include, but are not limited to:

  • lack of basic human resources (diapers, hygiene products, etc.)

  • food insecurity

  • homelessness

  • domestic violence or child abuse

  • childcare challenges

  • limited access to health/mental health or educational resources

  • transportation challenges (including to/from vaccination and testing sites)

Priority will be given to nonprofits with deep roots in the community, a demonstrated ability to address urgent needs, and reach historically underserved and vulnerable populations.

CFAAC will award grants up to $5,000. Applications will be open from February 7, 2022 through March 4, 2022 at 11:59 p.m. Note: the application does require a narrative description, and program and operating budgets.

Big gifts are getting bigger. How does that change your conversations with your clients?

Ranging from $175 million to a whopping $15 billion, the 10 largest gifts to charity in 2021 may have caught your clients’ attention. Not only do philanthropic gifts seem to keep getting bigger, but the future looks bright, too, with more than $84 trillion projected to be handed down in what may be one of the largest intergenerational transfers of wealth in history. Although most of that money will flow to heirs, projections indicate that charities could receive as much as 14% (nine percent in the form of bequests and the rest as lifetime gifts to charity).

As your Baby Boomer clients plan their estates, keep that 14% in mind, especially as philanthropists at all levels are becoming increasingly intent on making an immediate impact on important causes instead of leaving behind perpetual philanthropic structures.

The Community Foundation can help you develop an impact-focused philanthropy plan for your clients, including helping your clients “reverse engineer” the philanthropy structures that will be most likely to result in the difference your clients want to make in the world.

Read more about the key characteristics of clients you should be talking to.

When giving hard-to-value assets, creativity and caution are critical in the digital age

For some of your clients, the thought of giving artwork to a museum or other charity might have crossed their minds. Otherwise, in the estate plan you’ll build for the art collector, the choices largely boil down either to selling the pieces — or giving them to family and loved ones during life or through a bequest.

It is imperative to understand the tax consequences of each disposition scenario as you advise your clients about their collectibles. For example, clients may not realize that the higher capital gains rate of 28% generally applies to artwork and other collectibles–not the 20% rate typically applicable to sales of other types of capital gains assets. And this higher rate has been the subject of some tax reform discussions. Read more.
