Nominated by: Walk the Walk Foundation
In every community, there’s a quiet force driving change — businesses that show up, lift up, and motivate others. Thrive Gym, a gymnastics, ninja, and tumbling gym, is one of them. With nearly 17% of net revenue donated to charity, last year alone, Thrive Gym is proving that a small business can make a big difference — especially when giving is part of its culture.
“What distinguishes Thrive is not only the breadth of its giving, but the depth of its community engagement,” said nominator Nicole Dolan, Executive Director, Walk the Walk Foundation. “Under the inspiring leadership of owner Courtney Parfitt, Thrive has cultivated a culture in which giving back is part of everyday operations. Courtney leads by example, motivating her team, clients, and young athletes to become compassionate changemakers. Her leadership is grounded in empathy and vision.”
Thrive’s fundraising for nonprofits includes monthly “Give Back Weeks” that dedicate all open gym and open play proceeds to nonprofits and individuals in need. In 2024 alone, this program contributed $7,105, benefiting eight organizations including Walk the Walk Foundation, GiGi’s Playhouse of Annapolis, Blue Ribbon Project, Unite for Her, and Annapolis Light House. Thrive’s partnership with Walter S. Mills-Parole Elementary School is a model of sustained community collaboration. Since 2021, Thrive has offered tuition credits totaling $3,927 and delivered four on-site, five-week sessions for up to 20 students, ensuring access to quality physical enrichment programming for children.
Building on this strong foundation of giving, Thrive’s annual Friendship (Gymnastic) Meet — its premier fundraiser in partnership with GiGi’s Playhouse of Annapolis — continues to make a powerful impact. In 2024, the meet attracted more than 1,000 attendees and raised $28,000 to support individuals with Down syndrome and promote inclusion throughout the region.
Thrive’s commitment goes well beyond financial support. In 2024, staff and youth contributed more than 320 volunteer hours through events, programming, and service projects benefiting families in crisis, children with special needs, and underserved schools.
Perhaps the most forward-focused initiative, according to Nicole, is the Thrive Ambassadors Program, established in 2021 to develop young service leaders. During the 2024–2025 school year, 16 Ambassadors completed five major service days (over 150 hours), assembling classroom kits and hosting inclusive events for children with disabilities.
“Courtney does not view community support as a checkbox; it is her calling,” said Nicole. “She has infused Thrive Gym with values of inclusivity, generosity, and empowerment, and her influence resonates through her staff, her programs, and the families they serve.”
Taylor Pyles, Executive Director of Blue Ribbon Project reiterated Nicole’s thoughts: “What sets Thrive apart is not only the amount of their giving, but the heart behind it,” he said. “Their commitment to giving back is not a seasonal campaign — it is woven into the very culture of their business. Thrive Gym is a true partner in community betterment, often stepping up without being asked, quietly funding initiatives that fill critical gaps, and inspiring others in the business community to follow their lead.”
As a model for corporate social responsibility, Thrive’s story proves that when a business leads with heart, it can truly uplift an entire community.
