Nominated by Just One Sweater

There is no age minimum in serving others, and Andre Manning Jr. is the epitome of being young but mighty. Whether it’s starting a program to address food insecurity, partnering with local organizations like Just One Sweater, mentoring younger youth, or supporting an event in the community, you can count on Andre to show up and give his all. Simultaneously, he’s already thinking about other ways to improve his community and beyond, never treating his volunteer work as a one-off.

Andre is innovative and doesn’t wait for volunteer opportunities to come to him. Instead, he creates them. Understanding the food insecurity and poverty disparity throughout communities in Anne Arundel County, Andre knew there was a need to be met, and he took charge. As a leader with the BGCAA Bywater Butterfly Pantry, in partnership with Just One (Sweater), Andre started the youth-led initiative to address the issues at hand. His work has helped to serve residents in more than seven neighborhoods through supplying food, clothing, toiletries, and other necessities in donations.

Andre takes things a step further by being aware of the needs of not just a community, but individuals, showing that if you can inspire just one person, you can contribute positively to a whole generation. As a mentor to 12 younger members at the Bywater Boys & Girls Club, his support ranges from academic to leadership development, instilling confidence in the youth, proving his investment into those coming behind him.

Outside of his community volunteer efforts, Andre has lent his time to large-scale events, including the Kunta Kinte Heritage Festival, the Annapolis Juneteenth Festival, and M.E.G.A. (Manifesting Every Great Accomplishment), where he has assisted in event logistics, youth engagement and outreach. His dedication has not gone unnoticed, resulting in him being named the 2026 Boys & Girls Clubs of Annapolis & Anne Arundel County Youth of the Year, an honor recognizing exceptional young people who demonstrate outstanding leadership, academic success, character, and service. Despite the accolades, Andre’s attention is on the impact versus the recognition.

Young Volunteer of the Year

This award is presented to an individual student or a youth group, elementary through college age, who has demonstrated extraordinary commitment to the community through direct financial support, development of charitable programs, volunteering, and/or leadership. Examples of activities may include but aren’t limited to, performing public services, tutoring, mentoring, raising funds, or collecting goods.
