Anne Arundel County Literacy Council Endowment Fund

CFAAC Endowed Nonprofit Agency Fund

About the Organization

This CFAAC Endowed Nonprofit Agency Fund was established by the Anne Arundel County Literacy Council (AACLC), which was founded in 1977 by six Laubach tutors in Anne Arundel County. The Literacy Council provides personalized, one-on-one coaching in reading, writing, and math to adults, many of whom read at a 5th-grade level or lower. Many past students have successfully raised their reading and math levels significantly; some have even achieved their high school diplomas, while others have gone on to become successful college students.

AACLC's mission is to teach adults and out-of-school youth at low-literacy and pre-GED levels the essential reading, math, and English language skills that promote self-esteem, independence, and stronger family literacy. This enables them to become active, contributing members of their community. The vision of the Anne Arundel County Literacy Council is to foster a thriving, productive community that recognizes the needs of adults and out-of-school youth in literacy and math. The Council encourages these individuals to seek help and supports their efforts to gain the essential knowledge they need.

ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTY LITERACY COUNCIL ENDOWMENT FUND

A MESSAGE FROM THE ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTY LITERACY COUNCIL

This fund, established in 2023, was created to further and sustain the mission of the Anne Arundel County Literacy Council. The Council provides free one-on-one tutoring to low-income county adults and out-of-school youth in literacy, math, high school diploma preparation, and English language learning.

About Literacy Council Services

After an initial reading, math, or English assessment, if results show that tutoring can help a student improve their literacy or competency level, the student is matched with a trained volunteer tutor who meets with them individually at least one hour a week. Tutoring is paced to the student’s best learning speed. Meeting times and locations are flexible to meet student needs. Students receive assessments, tutoring, books, and materials at no cost.

Students & Goals

Students are county adults 18 and older who work with the Literacy Council to earn high school diplomas, pass the ASVAB and gain entrance into the military, improve their workplace skills, get a driver’s license, or pass the U.S. citizenship test, among many other goals. Some students were born and raised here, and others come from countries all over the world. All of them have made Anne Arundel County home.

Tutors

Literacy Council tutors are trained volunteers who work with students in one or more programs. There are over 200 active volunteers in the Literacy Council’s membership, and they collectively donate 13,000+ hours of their time in our communities and at the detention centers in Annapolis and Glen Burnie every year.
