A MESSAGE FROM THE CHESAPEAKE CONSERVACY

Chesapeake Conservancy believes that the Chesapeake community must respond to a regional and global crisis that imminently threatens our natural areas and wildlife by committing to the protection of 30% of the Chesapeake Bay watershed by 2030. This fund is solely dedicated to conserving priority lands and habitat within the Chesapeake watershed.

Chesapeake Conservancy’s headquarters are based in Anne Arundel County, where we are proud to be involved in several signature projects including partnering with Blacks of the Chesapeake and others to create a new 5-acre waterfront park in Annapolis at Elktonia/Carr's Beach, a historically-Black beach and the last remnant of the original 180-acre property purchased by Fred Carr in 1902 that was the heart of Black entertainment throughout the mid-Atlantic region where Blacks were welcome during a time of segregation. At Sandy Point State Park, we partner with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources and park staff to help improve facilities and enhance the experience for the park’s increasingly diverse audience. Our Conservation Innovation Center (CIC) generated and applied new data that revealed that the county was losing trees faster than almost any other county in the state. This data helped inform a recent change in Anne Arundel County law that is inspiring other counties to act. The CIC also helped the Arundel Rivers Federation launch an online water quality map that helps to answer important questions such as: Is it safe to swim? Can fish breathe? How dirty is the water?
