A MESSAGE FROM THE ANNAPOLIS AREA IMAGINATION LIBRARY
The goal of the Annapolis Area Imagination Library is to improve the early literacy skills of children from low-income and immigrant families so that they can succeed in learning to read in kindergarten - a key step towards success in school and in life.
THE CHALLENGE: Fewer than 50% of Anne Arundel children beginning school are considered prepared for the challenge, according to the results of the Maryland Kindergarten Readiness Assessment. The percent ready to thrive in kindergarten is much lower among some groups - for example, less than 30% among low-income and immigrant children.
A PROVEN SOLUTION: Research is clear on the value of books to the development of early literacy skills. Having 20 or more books at home is a better predictor of educational success than having a parent with a university education. Children growing up in homes with many books get 3 more years of education than children from bookless homes. Unfortunately, many low-income households have no children's books at all.
WHAT WE DO: We send a new, high-quality book each month by mail to almost 2000 children from birth to age 5 in Annapolis, Brooklyn Park and Ft. Meade. We are the local affiliate of the Dolly Parton Imagination Library.
The national organization selects books for their appeal to children, age-appropriateness and educational value. They mail over 2 million books each month, which makes the cost per book very low – only $2.20 including postage. Our mission is to register children and fund the cost of books and mailing. In addition, we send messages by postcard and email periodically reminding parents of the importance of their role in the development of their child: talking, singing, playing, reading and writing.
