Known as the “Energizer Bunny” of volunteers, Scott Gregory spends his days zipping from one nonprofit to the other, approaching each with the same unstoppable enthusiasm and incredible work ethic.

“He is truly my ‘go to’ person to take on new tasks,” said Stephen (Steve) Frantzich, Ph.D., President of Books for International Goodwill (B.I.G), an organization that collects, processes, and ships books to underserved populations abroad and locally. “If a job needs to be done, Scott is the one to ask. He never says ‘no’ and does an excellent job on all the tasks he is asked to do. I don’t know what we would do without him.”

Throughout the 23 years he has volunteered at B.I.G., Scott has organized the set-up of its warehouse space for four moves, planned the layout, created an operational plan, and continues to do hands-on work such as sorting, packing, and picking up books. Scott also serves on the B.I.G. board and shared a number of ideas that helped redirect B.I.G.’s efforts to have more of a local impact. B.I.G. now provides books to local teachers, home schoolers, community centers, and the Annapolis Little Free Library project.

Scott has also been involved with the Rotary Club of Parole, an organization of business and professional leaders united through a shared commitment to humanitarian service. Since 1995, Scott has taken on several roles within the club, serving as president in 2007-2008 and again in 2021-22 , and now working on administrative and fundraising tasks. David Vogel, past president of the Rotary Club, describes Scott as leader in the community as well as the club. “He has been an inspiration to many within our club,” said David. “Our club and this community are blessed to have such an outstanding person working on behalf of others.”

As a long-time volunteer (33 years) at St. Anne’s Church, Scott was formerly the church’s treasurer and has served on church initiatives such as tutoring on Clay Street, providing meals through the backpack buddies program, and working with the Lighthouse Shelter. He currently serves as a church usher and is a member of the St. Anne’s Outreach Committee. “When a need arises, Scott is there to help fulfill it,” said Mike Creighton, a retired Episcopal Bishop. “Scott has many gifts and skills and dominant among them is his sense of service for the wellbeing of others.”
In addition to B.I.G., the Parole Rotary Club, and St. Anne’s, Scott works with many other organizations, either serving on boards, parking cars, fundraising, building projects, and other hands-on work. These nonprofits include Leadership Anne Arundel, Habitat for Humanity, CHERA (Community Health and Education for Rural Africa), International Club of Annapolis, Martins Cove Farm Association, and Naptown BarBayq. Scott’s commitment to the community does not stop with his volunteering efforts; he also contributes significant funds to more than a dozen local charities.

“Scott helps numerous local organizations survive and prosper,” said Steve. “In the process, he makes Anne Arundel County a better place to live.”

Scott was nominated by Books for International Goodwill.

The Volunteer of the Year Award is presented to an individual or team of volunteers (formal or informal) with a proven record of volunteerism who, through the donations of time and talent, has played a key role in helping local nonprofit organizations provide services to the community. They often make the difference in an organization being able to expand its services to a wider audience or move its programs to a higher level of service to the community.
