In this edition of the CFAAC Community Connector, we'll cover CFAAC news and impact, updates on grants, events, and information about the 2024 Celebration of Philanthropy Awards and Morehead-Cain Scholars' experience. We also present the last in our series on "The Great Wealth Transfer" and offer insights for professional advisors.
A Message From our President & CEO
The nomination applications for our annual Celebration of Philanthropy Awards opened last month, and reading through them is truly one of my favorite parts of my job. Witnessing the good in this community fills me with even more hope for the future. Nominations are open until July 11 so if you know someone or an organization that is making a difference in the lives of others in Anne Arundel County, please consider nominating them.
As it was last year, the luncheon will be held at LIVE! Casino and Hotel Maryland but it will be held a little earlier this year on October 30, so mark your calendars to attend! Consider becoming a Celebration of Philanthropy sponsor early and take advantage of the opportunity to highlight your organization throughout the year in this newsletter, on our website, and on social media as well as at the luncheon. Read more about the Celebration of Philanthropy Awards Luncheon in this newsletter.
Last month, we welcomed five Moorehead-Cain Scholars into our fold. These talented students will be with CFAAC for eight weeks this summer, reviewing CFAAC's Community Needs Assessment report, studying the data generated by grants made to address community needs, and working with county constituents to recommend solutions. We are thrilled to be working with such young, dedicated scholars and we are excited to hear their unique insights and perspectives.
Even though summer is synonymous with relaxation and vacation, we are gearing up for a busy one with the scholars, the Celebration of Philanthropy nomination review process, grant application openings and reviews, and educational programs.
Enjoy the warmer weather,
Mary Spencer

In Case You Missed It: May's CFAAC Commentary in The Capital Gazette:
What an Emerging Philanthropist Needs to Know
By Mary Spencer, CFAAC President & CEO
For some, stepping into the world of philanthropy is an easy transition because of their upbringing and financial position. For others, it may be entering a whole new realm. But no matter how you begin your philanthropic journey, you have one thing in common with other philanthropists, the desire to create a true impact in the world. And that’s a great thing.
Whether you start big or small, becoming philanthropic can be complex when it comes to why and where to donate your funds. First, with all the challenges the world and our communities face—poverty, environmental concerns, lack of educational and health resources—choices of where to give can be overwhelming. This is why it’s so important to create a strategy so you feel that you are truly making a difference.
Welcome Morehead-Cain Scholars!
The Community Foundation welcomed five Morehead-Cain Scholars from the University of North Carolina (UNC) on May 28. A welcome reception attended by CFAAC Board and staff, county and state representatives, and local Morehead-Cain alumni was held on May 30. The scholars will be working with the CFAAC team for eight weeks this summer to create an in-depth report that will inform our grantmaking strategy. Read more about the scholars and their work here.
HeartSmart Donates AED to CFAAC
According to an American Heart Association survey, about 50% of American workers cannot locate an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) at their workplace. That won’t happen at the Community Foundation. Last month, CFAAC received an AED thanks to HeartSmart, The Cliff Roop Cardiac Support and Education Foundation, Inc., a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the survival rates of Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) in Anne Arundel County. The Foundation is committed to raising awareness, supports AED placement, and offers training for their use. Established in 2000 as a Leadership Anne Arundel initiative, HeartSmart honors the late County Councilman Cliff R. Roop, who succumbed to SCA. Their mission is to make Anne Arundel County a “heart-safe” community. Thanks to the Anne Arundel County Fire Department, the CFAAC staff was also trained on AED use last month.
“We are deeply grateful to HeartSmart for this life-saving donation,” said Mary Spencer, CFAAC President & CEO. “Knowing that we are prepared to potentially save a life is a priceless gift. We are also thankful to the Anne Arundel County Fire Department for their thorough training.”
AED/CPR statistics:
Nine in 10 cardiac arrest victims who receive a shock from an AED in the first minute will live.
AEDs placed in businesses, community centers, or other gathering places can increase the chance of survival by 75%
More than 15% of Out of Hospital Cardiac Arrests (OHCAs) occur in a public location.

The Great Wealth Transfer: The Value of Partnerships Between Heirs and Professional Advisors
This is the fourth article in a four-part series about the Great Wealth Transfer
The Great Wealth Transfer presents opportunities and challenges for families and their professional advisor partners. The question is: is everyone prepared?
First, the opportunities: if you are inheriting significant wealth, you have the opportunity to work with professional advisors to devise an optimal strategy to manage your wealth, including giving to the causes you want to support. Don’t wait to talk to an advisor about initiating or strengthening your estate plans including your wills, power of attorney, healthcare directives, and philanthropic strategies. It’s never too early to start. Professional advisors also have an opportunity to engage and develop a relationship with heirs in a meaningful way, which can be exciting and rewarding.
The Community Foundation of Anne Arundel County is thrilled to welcome the following to our family of funds:
Kimberly Keith Memorial Fund: A Donor Advised Fund established to support the philanthropic interests of Kimberly Keith's family, honoring her life and legacy.
The pandemic taught us many lessons. One great lesson was the collaboration that took place when nonprofits across the county banded together to bring food, clothing, and care to those in our community who were in need.
More recently, the city of Annapolis, Anne Arundel County, private donors, and nonprofits including Blacks of the Chesapeake (a CFAAC Designated Fundholder), Chesapeake Conservancy (a CFAAC Designated Fundholder), The Conservation Fund, and the Maryland Heritage Area Authority entered into an agreement to acquire a cottage that once belonged to Parlett L. Moore, an educator and former president of Coppin State University, from his grandchildren.
The property, which spans about two-thirds of an acre, is adjacent to Elktonia Beach, a five-acre shoreline acquired by the city in 2022. Elktonia Beach represents the remaining part of the historically significant Carr’s and Sparrow’s Beach, two popular resorts on the Chesapeake Bay that were safe havens for the Black community during the era of segregation. Working together, the nonprofits and partners helped to make this acquisition a pivotal achievement in a 20-year effort to preserve Black heritage sites along the Chesapeake Bay.
The fabric of our community is woven with stories of nonprofits working together. For example, CFAAC continues our work with Arundel Community Development Services (ACDS) to bring the community educational workshops. We are contributing to county efforts to bring a new nonprofit hub to life, and countless other relationships that illustrate how strategic partnerships can make an enormous impact in our community. CFAAC connects donors who care with causes that matter to make Anne Arundel County a great place to live, work, and play for all.
If you have questions about how your philanthropy can support local nonprofits working together to tackle the needs of our community, we’d love to hear from you. Give us a call at 410.280.1102 or contact us at info@cfaac.org for more information about how we can help you. We are your Community Foundation.
