CFAAC awards more than $140,000 to local nonprofits that are making a difference in Anne Arundel County!
Earlier this month, thanks to a generous grant from the Deerbrook Charitable Trust, CFAAC awarded $143,620 to six nonprofit organizations in Anne Arundel County. More than 25 nonprofits submitted applications, and after a careful evaluation and review process, the Ladders to SUCCESS grants committee announced the recipients. Of the six organizations selected, three grants support Youth Development programs that provide academic advancement and life-skills development, and three grants support services focused on Economic Development programs that eliminate barriers to employment and provide workforce training, skill-building, and job placement.
Through our Ladders to SUCCESS grants program, CFAAC is committed to improving our community by supporting local nonprofit programs that are making significant impacts and providing measurable outcomes for low-income county residents to live healthy, vibrant, and successful lives.

Chesapeake Arts Center
Chesapeake Arts Center (CAC) uses the arts to excite, educate, engage, inspire, and grow our community through performances, exhibitions, classes, and collaborations with artists, educators, business, community leaders and various organizations. They were awarded a $25,000 grant to fund the Chesapeake Arts Center Youth MakerSpace Program, effectively expanding the pilot program that was implemented during the 2015-2016 school year. CAC will continue to partner with Brooklyn Park Middle School to serve 150 of their students in the MakerSpace afterschool program. The program is intended to provide long-term impact on student achievement, innovation, and technical skills through STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics) learning in the MakerSpace.
Anne Arundel Conflict Resolution Center
Anne Arundel Conflict Resolution Center (AACRC) provides mediation, facilitation, and education for the peaceful resolution of conflicts. They were awarded an $18,620 grant to fund the Conflict Resolution Program for students in grades 6-8 at Meade Middle School. This funding expands a pilot program that was implemented at the school in February 2016. The program is focused on conflict resolution, anger management, stress reduction, effective communication, and mediation. 150 of the school’s most vulnerable students will participate in the program. Workshops will be conducted by a staff member and trained facilitators.
Girls on the Run of the Greater Chesapeake
Girls on the Run inspires girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum that creatively integrates running into the curriculum. The organization was awarded a $25,000 grant for approximately 375 low-income girls to participate in Girls on the Run during the 2016-2017 school year. Girls on the Run is a physical activity based youth development program designed to develop and enhance social, psychological, and physical competencies of girls by employing running and other physical activities.
Anne Arundel County Community Action Agency
Anne Arundel County Community Action Agency empowers, educates, coordinates and assists qualified people, including families, youth, children, the disabled and seniors in reducing poverty and building a better life for themselves. The agency received a $25,000 grant to fund the Green Summer Works program. The Green Summer Works program was developed to increase economic opportunities for low-income youth in Anne Arundel County by combining paid work experience with comprehensive workforce preparation, life skills education, and financial literacy training. The program will serve 25 Anne Arundel County youth during the summer of 2016.
Light House
Light House helps rebuild lives with compassion by providing shelter and services to prevent homelessness and empower people as they transition toward employment, housing and self-sufficiency. Light House was awarded a $25,000 grant to support the Building Employment Success Training (B.E.S.T.) program. The program provides workforce development training and transitional employment opportunities to people affected by homelessness and poverty in Anne Arundel County. The B.E.S.T. program will provide 80 individuals with the opportunity to participate in a 14-week inclusive curriculum that includes an in-house internship in culinary arts or facilities maintenance and wraparound support services.
Anne Arundel Workforce Development Corporation
Anne Arundel Workforce Development Corporation (AAWDC) provides innovative, high quality workforce development services to Anne Arundel County businesses and citizens. AAWDC received a $25,000 grant to fund the Summer Pathways to Careers program. The program provides youth between the ages of 16 and 24 a six-week summer work opportunity that includes pre-employment training and mentorship in order to break down barriers to employment, identify and navigate career paths, and find a road to economic and life success. This funding will expand the program to serve 25 additional disconnected high school seniors and/or out-of-school youth or young adults during critical summer months and throughout the year.
